HIKING IN BALKAN RANGE MOUNTAINS

The Balkan Range cuts right across the country - from the border with Serbia to the Black Sea coast, a forbidding mountain known to the Bulgarians as Stara Planina or the "Old Mountains". The 550km-long granite Balkan Range has become emblematic of Bulgaria - a birthplace of the Bulgarian nation-state and a place where Bulgarian traditions and culture have been preserved during the Ottoman occupation. It is also a climatic barrier between north and south Bulgaria with more snowfalls on its northern slopes than on the southern. Average temperature around Mount Botev, the highest peak (2376m), are -8.9C in January, and 7.6C in July. Its 29 peaks above 2000m, some of which definitely Alpine, are of great interest to tourists and climbers.

The numerous alpine formations in the western part of the mountain - caves, rocks, and gorges, attract extreme climbers and mountaineers. The Central Balkan range is the highest with the most tourist chalets and high-mountain huts. Hundreds of tracks have been marked, most of them leading to important historic and cultural places. A landmark is the National Park "Central Balkan" with 10 biosphere reserves under the protection of UNESCO.

Itinerary: The suggested itinerary below can be adjusted - shortened, extended or modified according to your plans, skills or flight date. If you feel tired on your hiking tour, a day or two of your schedule can be replaced on site with visits to places of interest, cultural and historical sites.

Day1: Transfer to the town of Kalofer. If time allows - visit of Kalofer monastery

Day2: Town of Kalofer - Rai hut - Rai waterfall - Pleven hut

Day3: Pleven hut - Vidima hut - Vidima waterfall - Village of Apritsi

Day4: Village of Apriltsi - Haidushka Pesen hut - Ushite peak - Kozia Stena (Goat's Wall) natural reserve - Village of Chiflik

Day5: Visit places of interest. Transfer: Village of Chiflik - Sofia Airport

Tour dates:  5 days/4 nights scheduled at your convenience from May to October

Tour quota: Minimum 2 hikers

Hiking duration: 5 - 8 hours per day

Accommodations: 2-star hotel in the town of Kalofer and the village of Apriltsi, 3-star hotel in the village of Chiflik, and Pleven hut.

Food arrangements: All breakfasts are included in the tour package. Lunch and dinner can be arranged upon request. All meals include traditional Bulgarian food, which is not much different from the European cuisine. All lunch meals if ordered are "to go".

Tour includes:

  • A competent guide / driver

  • Transfer Sofia - Town of Kalofer and Village of Chiflik - Sofia
  • Rent a car with a driver for 5 days
  • Everyday transfers to/from the hike start-point
  • All fuel expenses during the tour
  • 4 night stays in two and three-star hotels and a mountain hut.
  • 4 breakfasts
  • Detailed route map of the Balkan Range.

    • Prices: Two adults: 675 EURO total package price
               (share double room)

               Family of 2 adults + 2 children under 10 years old:
               735 EURO total package price
               (share large 2 bedroom with 2 extra beds or three bedroom)

               Family/Group of 3 adults: 735 EURO total package price
               (share three bedroom)

               Group 4-8 adults: 325 EURO per person.

    Discount specials: Participants taking part in two hiking tours
    (Example: Pirin and Rila mountains) in one calendar year are eligible
    for 10% discount on the tour price.
