STARA ZAGORA - Bulgaria » Stara Zagora is situated in the northern part of the Upper Thracian Lowland, 240 km southeast of Sofia, 95 km northeast of Plovdiv, 70 km southwest of Sliven, 45 km north of Dimitrovgrad and 37 km southeast of Kazanlak. Stara Zagora is a regional centre and one of the oldest towns in Bulgaria. It is poetically named the Town of Linden Trees and offers sights of interest such as the ruins of Augusta Trayana fortress, the historical museum with unique collections of prehistoric pottery, sculptures and Thracian chariots, the Roman mosaics, the astronomical observatory, Eski Mosque, built in 15th century. The mineral baths are just 15 km northwest of the town and the balneological resort close to the village of Yagoda is 16 km away.
